Abstract:
This session will document the Art+Feminism Wikidata initiative. Over the last two years we have built tools and processes to generate a refined on focus list (P5008) of ~5000 Wikidata items from the 58,000 articles created or edited at past events. It took a large effort to build the systems and protocols to handle the data at scale (e.g. sorting items by occupation, etc). This talk will demonstrate our intention, process, some of the short term outcomes, and point towards future long term outcomes.
This work is centered around a tool we wrote for this purpose that will semi-automate the process of moving data from Wikipedia to Wikidata. We have designed this tool to be accessible to those without programming experience. It uses simple article lists to generate spreadsheets for human evaluation. These sheets are then transformed back into QuickStatements ready data. The script requires no special libraries or dependencies, beyond what is available by default in basic python configurations.
We will talk about some of the ways we have implemented this resource, including our new worklist which is a list of articles that Art+Feminism tracks from previous edit-a-thon's output, which also have key article improvement alert templates.
Depending on the programming needs/availability of space in the conference schedule, this could be a 15 minute high level overview, 20-30 minute more detailed survey with a demonstration of the Wikidata Quicksheets tool. We have also proposed a separate 45-60 minute hands on workshop session.
