The Friday talks were shown on YouTube and user:Legoktm magically converted them to nice quality .webm files on Commons, in this category: commons:Category:WikiConference_North_America_+_Mapping_USA_2022_recordings
He advises us:
- <https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Video2commons> does most of the magic
- You paste a YouTube URL, edit the auto-generated description and then it automatically downloads the video, converts it if necessary and then uploads it to Commons.
- It also has an option to upload the file directly instead of pulling from YouTube, but I've never used that before.
- For some reason for these videos it only uploaded 360p copies instead of the full HD ones on YouTube, so I manually used <https://github.com/yt-dlp/yt-dlp> to get the full quality, and then used the option to re-encode the video as webm as part of downloading, and then uploaded those. Because the videos were pretty short I did that on my laptop, otherwise I would've used a Toolforge/Wikimedia Cloud server.
- Q: does one do this yt-dlp before or after the other step?
