Title:

A chatbot against fake news

Name:

Adrian Pino

Wikimedia username:

E-mail address:

Resume:

Geographical impact:

Argentina (I), Latin America (II)

Type of project:

Technology

What is your idea?

We seek to improve the development of a Chatbot to train users over the age of 60 years-old who are victims of many fake news campaigns. The chatbot already exists for Messenger but we seek to improve its interface and launch a marketing campaign on Facebook that reaches users in that age group

Why is it important?

We understand that many of the disinformation campaigns have a major impact on people over 60 years of age. That makes them become involuntary accomplices of fake news campaigns. We seek to reverse that process through a playful and simple tool that helps them reflect on the information they receive and share.

Is your project already in progress?

How is it relevant to credibility and Wikipedia? (max 500 words)

We consider that this proposal can open the way to reduce false information circulating on social networks and messaging systems. In addition, it reinforces the basic knowledge of these users to detect fake news and curb disinformation.

What is the ultimate impact of this project?

the retirees sector has around 5 million people in Argentina. We seek to reach 5% of that total (250.000) in this first stage.

Could it scale?

Yes, it is an initiative that can be easily scaled. We seek to reinforce the experience in Argentina first for a sector of retirees. Then scale to the rest of the users over 60 years of the country. And in a third stage, climbing to new Latin American countries.

Why are you the people to do it?

We have formed a team that investigates disinformation campaigns at the University since 2018. We have collaborated with CredCo to translate its indicators into Spanish. We know the subject and its impact.

What is the impact of your idea on diversity and inclusiveness of the Wikimedia movement?

We seek to serve a sector that is generally excluded from public policies on technology and digital literacy, such as retirees. Its available time and its integration with technologies makes it a vulnerable sector that needs to be addressed.

What are the challenges associated with this project and how you will overcome them?

We need to improve the "look and feel" of the tool and launch an aggressive marketing campaign that will impact users over 60 years of age. We have planned some additional actions of closeness in Retiree Centers and demos of the Chatbot with face-to-face actions.
