Abstract:

Its ability to process vast amounts of data and identify patterns can enhance diagnostics, accelerate drug discovery, optimize financial operations, enable autonomous vehicles, and personalize learning experiences. However, the rapid growth of AI raises concerns about ethical issues surrounding privacy, data security, and algorithmic bias. The displacement of human labor by automation raises concerns about job loss and socioeconomic inequality. Additionally, the risks associated with AI malfunction or manipulation can have devastating consequences, such as autonomous weapons or a global AI arms race.
To balance the promise and peril of AI, society must consider the ethical implications of AI technology, such as privacy and algorithmic bias. Case studies where AI has malfunctioned or made critical decisions without human intervention demand careful ethical considerations and robust governance frameworks. Addressing the promise and peril of AI requires a multidisciplinary approach, including collaboration between technologists, policymakers, ethicists, and social scientists.
