WikiConference North America is all about celebrating the success of different projects and missions within North America. We invite everyone participating in WikiConference North America (whether in-person or as virtual attendee) to the WikiConference North America 2024 Editing Challenge!
During WikiConference North America 2024 (3-6 October 2024), we invite you to fill different editing challenges. And everyone who fills 7 out of 13 tasks will receive a special and unique WikiConference North America barnstar. You don't have to be registered to WikiConference North America to participate.
The tasks invite you to explore different (maybe sometimes new to you?) ways to contribute to Wikimedia projects. And they are related to 2024 WikiConference North America theme: Crossroads. Some of them aim to focus on improving contents in Indiana and support diversity, others – invite you to collaborate with others, and some - to support our future readers.
Rules
- The challenge takes place 0:00 AM 3 October EDT until 1:00 PM 6 October EDT
- The challenge is open to every editor, not just to WikiConference North America participants
- During that time participants can work on the tasks from the list below; you can do the tasks in any language version of the respective Wikimedia projects
- To participate you need to sign up in the results table and report your edits there
- Each participant is responsible for tracking and updating their own progress
- At the end of the challenge period, we will check your results and award you with a nice and shiny digital barnstar! Top in-person contributor will receive a special, unique physical prize!
- Tie-breakers for the physical prize will be determined by (in descending order): total number of tasks performed, volume of contribution (measured in bytes)

Tasks
1 | Sign your name up for the Editing Challenge | The most important thing is to show up! Sign your name in the results table, so that we know you are with us! |
2 | From Toronto to Indianapolis with love | Toronto was the host for last year's conference. Did you take some photos of Toronto or about the conference but never uploaded? Wanted to edit something about Toronto but never found the time to do it? Time to dig up that photo or go down the memory lane!
Make 1 edit in any Wikimedia projects about Toronto. |
3 | Improve Indiana content on 2 Wikipedia pages | Add something meaningful related to Indiana on Wikipedia by creating or expanding 2 pages. This includes people, places, objects, literary works, customs within Indiana. Removing or correcting inaccurate content also counts, but reverting vandalism or making typo corrections do not count. |
4 | Transcribe 1 page about Indiana on Wikisource | Wikisource is an online digital library of free-content textual sources.
To transcribe a page, look for pages on the index page that are marked in red link (not proofread) in the A standard history of Lake County, Indiana, and the Calumet region book. |
5 | Proofread 2 pages about Indiana on Wikisource | To proofread a page (marked in yellow on the index page of the Early Indianapolis book), you can follow these basic guidelines:
|
6 | Add at least 2 new properties on a Wikidata item related to Indiana |
Go to Wikidata, find an item related to Indiana and add 2 properties of your choice to the item. |
7 | Update 1 Wikivoyage page about Indiana | Contribute something meaningful related to Indiana on Wikivoyage by making at least 1 edit. This includes adding, verifying or updating content about transportation to get in, navigating within the city, attractions, prices and cuisines of restaurants, places to sleep in any towns, cities or regions in Indiana. |
8 | Upload a picture of a local sight (such as a monument, park or school) to Commons | A fairly simple way to contribute to Commons is to upload a photo of a monument in your city or region, to do so follow these steps:
|
9 | Use WikiShootMe! to identify and take pictures for Wikidata items | Use WikiShootMe! to find Wikidata items in your city or region that need pictures. Take a picture of that object and upload directly using WikiShootMe! interface. It will automatically upload the item to Wikimedia Commons and add the image as a property on Wikidata. |
10 | Wiki Loves Indianapolis Monuments | Some of the historical places in Indianapolis are missing photos, and many that have photos were taken from 2010 or earlier. Use Wiki Loves Monuments map to take new (or missing) photos of these places. |
11 | Make at least 1 edit each day of WikiConference North America | Whether it is a minor spelling correction, a big article work, a picture upload, or a Wikidata edit, or any other edit, try to make at least one contribution to a Wikimedia project each day of WikiConference North America (3-6 October). |
12 | Thank someone | Whether it's a barnstar or a message of thanks, leave a message on their talk page to show appreciation to a contributor that you value! |
13 | Edit 1 page on Wikispecies | Wikispecies is an online directory of species to catalogue all species on Earth. Make a meaningful edit in Wikispecies. |
