Title:

Building Wikimedia support at the University of Toronto: A five-year retrospective

Theme:

Recent Changes, Community Initiatives, Education, Equity / Inclusion / Community Health, GLAM / Heritage / Culture

Type of session:

Lecture

Abstract:

I have supported Wikimedia projects (mostly focused on Wikipedia and Wikidata) at the University of Toronto (U of T) Libraries since 2018, first as Wikipedian-in-Residence (2018-19), then as Open Knowledge Specialist with Wikimedian duties as explicit part of my responsibilities.

My activities at U of T include Wikipedia/Wikidata-based discovery work on collections, Wikipedia template contributions, advanced classroom assignments and faculty/staff bootcamps, and annual edit-a-thons. Collaborators have included librarians, staff, and students from across U of T's three campuses and numerous colleges, as well as peer institutions, public libraries, and local community organisations.

The proposed presentation will offer a high-level, five-year retrospective on the following:

  • background and priorities informing work
  • key activities undertaken and why
  • limits to Wikimedia engagement

For community Wikimedians, this presentation may offer a view of how various activities at an academic library can enrich our information and communities. For attendees in the GLAM sector, this retrospective may offer informed considerations on institutional Wikimedia engagement.
