Herron Art Library
The Herron Art Library, the research library of the Herron School of Art, offers the IU Indianapolis community and residents of Indiana research materials on art and artists pre-history through the present day. The library formally began its service to the central Indiana community as an art research library in 1906. Today, the library continues to enjoy its long-standing reputation as central Indiana's primary lending art library for modern and contemporary art. The library's tradition of responding to the present-day needs of its users is reflected in the resources, services, and special internal and external projects in which the library engages. The Herron Art Library's holdings include books, DVDs, and journals, with emphasis on modern through contemporary art. The library is home to a notable and growing Fine Press and Artists' Book collection.

Central Library, Indianapolis Public Library
This will be a general library tour, tour of the ISCR (special collections) and CBLC (Center for Black Literature and Culture) in the hour and a half. As the hub of The Indianapolis Public Library system, Central Library showcases renowned architecture and services. The original 1917 building, designed by Paul Cret and constructed of Indiana limestone in the Greek Doric style, was considered one of the most outstanding secular buildings in the U.S. Its six-story glass and steel-framed addition, designed by Evans Woollen, opened in 2007. Both the original building and the 2007 addition included a unique architectural feature, the names of iconic authors and literary figures carved into the building's limestone walls. Of the 80+ names memorialized in this fashion, there were just five women represented and no authors of color. In 2021, due to major support from Michael & Adelpha Twyman, the Dr. Michael R. Twyman Endowment Fund, and Lilly Endowment Inc. through The Indianapolis Public Library Foundation, The Library added ten new names to improve representation of the world’s historical, literary, and artistic development. A public unveiling followed in April, 2022.

Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site
Take a tour of this beautiful 10,000 sq.ft. Italianate Victorian family home of President Benjamin Harrison – the 23rd US president (1889-1893) and Indiana’s only president. Built in 1875, the home is beautifully furnished with many of Harrison’s paintings, furniture, and other artifacts including political memorabilia. The dining room features presidential china, and Harrison’s study is filled with personal belongings from his White House years and his oval office desk. The majority of the house furnishings—which give an accurate view of the Victorian era—are original to the Harrison family, including stunningly recreated original wallpaper designs in the parlors and library. While not the most famous president, there were several notable achievements during Harrison's administration. Harrison signed the Sherman Antitrust Act, the first federal law to combat monopolies and promote fair competition in business. Harrison also signed the McKinley Tariff, which raised duties to protect domestic industries, and supported veterans by increasing pensions for Civil War soldiers. Additionally, six new states were admitted to the Union under his leadership. For his time, Harrison was known as a strong advocate for civil rights, pushing for federal protection of African American voting rights, though his efforts were blocked in Congress. He also modernized the U.S. Navy, making it a more formidable force. The current special exhibit, Life in the White House, showcases rarely seen photographs, memorabilia, letters, and personal effects belonging to various members of the Harrison family while living in the White House, to highlight how the Harrison family navigated private and public life while living in the "people’s house."
Address: 200 W Washington St, Indianapolis, IN 46204 Report to the Welcome Center, located in the red building behind the main residence, for to gather for the tour. |

Indiana War Memorial Museum
The Indiana War Memorial Museum, located within the Indiana War Memorial in downtown Indianapolis, contains over 30,000 square feet of exhibit space dedicated to Indiana’s military history. Visitors are taken on a historic journey spanning from the Revolutionary War into the most recent military conflicts, connecting to the past through displays featuring original artifacts which include battle flags, weapons, and personal effects of Hoosiers who served our country. This tour provides a docent-led Indiana War Memorial historical overview presentation in Pershing Auditorium (if not in use for an event) followed by an overview of the Shrine Room. Once the Partial Guided Tour is completed, the group has the option to proceed to the Indiana War Memorial Museum for a self-guided tour with any remaining time they have allotted. A partial-guided tour offers members of the group the opportunity to develop an understanding and appreciation for the construction, function, and mission of the memorial through the guided portion, and then allowing for individuals to focus on areas of the museum that are of interest to them and dedicate more time to viewing these areas at their own pace.
Address: 55 E. Michigan St, Indianapolis, IN Meet in the main lobby of the Indiana War Memorial Museum. Then proceeding towards the west, on the south sidewalk. Turn right (north) at the end of the sidewalk. Cameras, including those with flash, are permitted. |
